Left Alone • Track 01

Mr. Nice

Defensive Counter Air. He ain’t the forceful type.

Liner Notes

About the song

“Mr. Nice” is the first track on Left Alone, listening to you with a happy grin, a good heart, and just enough patience to see where things might end up later tonight. But not too much patience. He’s not the type to chase the fight. He’s the type to hold station and see if the fight comes to him.

Mission: DCA. Defensive Counter Air. DCA protects friendly forces and assets from enemy air attacks. It means intercepting threats, covering friendly airspace, and staying vigilant enough to engage at a moment’s notice. Sometimes the right move is hanging out on the blades and waiting for the optimum moment to glide onto the dance floor.

Mr. Nice Lyrics

        Mr. Nice

        Written by
        Bill “Lefty” Lawrence

        [Verse 1]
I watched my friends all glide across the floor
        Two-steppin’ with their girls
Then I saw you walkin’ through that door
And you rattled my whole world

I could tell that somethin’ made you cry
Like a heart that had to mend
So I pulled out a chair by my side
Said, “let me be your friend”

A couple questions and it all poured out
Your feelings flowin’ like the beer
I sat and listened till they kicked us out
We were smilin’ ear to ear

You said “next time?” I said, “see you then”
So we went our separate ways
Every Friday we would meet again
Girl, you had me in a daze

        [Pre-Chorus]
And from then on, when you leaned in close
Girl, I swore I saw the signs

        [Chorus]
I guess I’m really not that kind of guy
To just sit here playin’ friend
Thought that you’d be kissin’ Nice goodbye
But that’s not how this story ends

        [Verse 2]
Then one Friday when you brought your friend
She came and sat with you and me
You said she wanted to meet the man
Whose gentle words have set you free

She saw how you felt safe and heard
But she hung on what I said
While you were talkin’ all about your world
        She was watchin’ me instead

        [Pre-Chorus]
And now it’s you that’s leanin’ close
But I ain’t the one you’re lookin’ for

        [Chorus – Final]
I guess I’m really not that kind of guy
To just sit here playin’ friend
Thought that you’d be kissin’ Nice goodbye
But that’s not how this story ends

        [Chorus – Slow / Outro]
I really didn’t want to make you cry
But I found true love in the end
Thought that you’d be kissin’ Nice goodbye
Now I’m out here dancin’ with your friend
