Bein’ Your Dad

One jet. One song. 1vX.

Liner Notes

About the song

One jet. One song against an unknown threat. Alone and unafraid, “Bein’ Your Dad” was the first song to leave the carrier deck, screaming off Cat 1 as the Alert 5 with a full bag of gas and a doomsday load of 6 Phoenix, 3 'winders, FAMMO, LANTIRN, and Tomcat Big Fighter spirit.

It’s my love letter to my three girls, written by a father who knows all too well how quickly time accelerates.

For the record, the dress did NOT show “too much skin.”

It was beautiful.

Mission: 1vX. The odds don’t matter. The mission is simple: be there, teach what matters, laugh often, and love without reservation.

The greatest thing I’ve ever done wasn’t flying fighters. It was bein’ your dad.

Ask Paddles

“Paddles” are Landing Signal Officers — Naval Aviators who help bring aircraft safely aboard the carrier. The nickname comes from the visual paddles used long ago to guide pilots on final approach.

Day or night, in all weather, they stand watch at the back of the boat to bring their fellow aviators home. And because every carrier landing matters, every pass gets graded.

Paddles are the rush chairmen of the Fleet: part safety officer, part coach, part morale engine. They keep standards high, spirits up, and sometimes have to deliver harsh news.

Don’t take trash, Paddles.

Bein’ Your Dad Lyrics

Bein' Your Dad

Written by
Bill “Lefty” Lawrence

Hey, listen here, son,
You know I'm your dad
The more you listen to me
The less your life will be bad
I want you to be, the best that you can
So here's some advice, 'bout bein' a man

'Cross God's green earth
I learned a few things
You think you're a prince—well, hell, I am the king

I will teach you all the things of throwin' a ball
I'll drive your silly friends with you to the mall
And when you're there, don't be the bomb
So I'm full of it? Take a look at your mom
I'll try to cheer you up when you get sad
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

I know you'll rebel, just like I did
My father wasted no time when he raised up this kid
You start talking back, I'll take all I can
And you'll never feel the back of my hand

It's part of growing up, or so they tell me
But I'll be back in your corner before they count three
I won't throw in the towel, even when it gets bad
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

You're young, dumb, and full of...
Mistakes
You better treat those girls nice and better tap on them brakes
I'll give you conversations that I never had
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

I'll give you all the tips to care for a lawn
I'll even give you grief when you start to yawn
I'll drag you right beside me when football is on
I'll give you my keys, though I hate when you're gone
Don't you dare scratch it—the tank comes back full
You're better off son, when you follow these rules

I'll show you how to look a man in the eye
And I'm not afraid of you seein' me cry
They say, "all plans are worthless, but plannin' ain't bad"
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

All the young colts are too fast from the gate
I'll give advice on how you should date
Always be early, never be late
Hell, I'll give you chores that I know you will hate
We'll go hit the gym, when you get mad
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

I made up this song to help you out in this world

Then God saw it fit to gift me...
...with three girls

Well, there she is, I see her boyfriend grin
Darlin', isn't that dress showin', well, too much skin?
You're mad at me? Yeah, I know that it's prom

Yeah, I know when I'm right and I get told when I'm wrong
I'll shut up now and mosey along
While my daughter goes off and complains to her mom
I give the boy my tips to keep a good lawn
If you don't treat my baby with ultimate care
Then take a good look, boy, 'cause I'll bury you there

Hey, baby girl, don't be so mad
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

What? You're talkin' to me again? Here goes...

My darlin' daughters, here's my advice
Make sure those boys are treatin' you nice
The fastest way to see through their lies
Is to push back those hands and look in their eyes

I taught you all the things of throwin' a ball
I ate in the food court while you're in the mall
When football is on, you sat with me
I knew you would love it eventually
I try to cheer you up when you get sad
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

We've gone out bowlin', you almost got my high score
You know what a jack and a dipstick are for
We boiled mud bugs, straight outta the crick
Saw the looks on their faces as you're drivin' that stick
I took you shootin', you were hell on those cans
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

She looks thoughtful, so I leave her alone
And she heads to her room to get on that damn phone
I hope she listened to me, 'cause she'll soon be grown
Not lookin' forward to her leavin' home

She's heading off to grab a hold of her life
She's gonna be a doctor and maybe someday a wife
I hope the sun's shinin' on your special day
'Cause I'll blame it on that when I give you away
So you betcha I'll grill him when you bring home your man
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

I will always love you the best that I can
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad

I will always love you with all that I can
'Cause that's what you get for me bein' your dad
